No More Like-Gating

Facebook Bans Like-Gating

Many people have been talking about recent changes in Facebook’s platform and what it means. Many people have had confusion about the loss of like-gating or some call it “like-bating”. Today I would like to discuss what is actually going on here and what it means for you, your Facebook fans and the future of gaining more fans.

Here’s what Facebook had to say:

[su_quote]You must not incentivize people to use social plugins or to like a Page. This includes offering rewards, or gating apps or app content based on whether or not a person has liked a Page. It remains acceptable to incentivize people to login to your app, checkin at a place or enter a promotion on your app’s Page. [/su_quote]

Why this is OK

Facebook wants to show you content that you really feel is relevant and that you care about. If you are incentivized to like a page with a reward that has nothing to do with the original page then you are liking a page for all the wrong reasons. Facebook wants Pages to provide real and relevant content to its fans that truly offer value, and that is something their fans will be interested in.

Here is what Facebook said about the loss of like-gating:

[su_quote]To ensure quality connections and help businesses reach the people who matter to them, we want people to like Pages because they want to connect and hear from the business, not because of artificial incentives. We believe this update will benefit people and advertisers alike. [/su_quote]

If you have like-gating in place

If you have like-gates in place, they will no longer work after November 5th.
